So, Hanneke. She lives in Wormer, deep in the Dutch Zaan region, with her husband Martijn and their two kids: Abby and Ravi. Her daughter Abby sometimes helps crocheting for MARIE MARIE, but honestly? Not really her thing. Fair enough.
What do you love doing most?
Cycling. Walking. Or whenever I’m behind my sewing machine. As long as it’s something creative and preferably outdoors. Or wait, creative outside. Is that a thing?
How did it all start?
In primary school! We had to crochet a cushion cover. The yarn came in three shades: brown, light brown, and darker brown. I was hooked (pun intended). I started sewing classes at eighteen. Thread and fabric, that’s my world! I stopped for a while, life got busy. Until I got a hernia. The only thing I could do while standing? Crochet. So I did. And then three years ago, founder Marthe her mother came to me and asked: “Can you help make a bag?”. And the rest is history.
Do you remember your very first MARIE bag?
Oh yes. The very first one! I didn’t quite catch the trick in the pattern, so my bag just kept getting wider and wider… I think I undid it ten times. Eventually I got it right. Let’s just say my enthusiasm won over my pattern reading skills.
Favourite bag?
Definitely the ANNA + NINA bag. Those colours! But I’m not a huge fan of making the big shoppers. I like things that are done quickly, so mini shoppers are more my thing. Especially the Pienie. One bag takes exactly the right amount of time: not too little, not too long.
